You didn’t know these facts about the watermelon

In the summer, watermelons are almost impossible to obtain due to the high demand. Did you know that this juicy piece of fruit, er, vegetable, has quite a few special properties? You’ll read all about that today!

  1. It’s not a fruit

Yes, we’re saying it all wrong. Melon isn’t a fruit. The melon is related to the cucumber and pumpkin and is therefore a vegetable. Fruit vegetables, to be precise. These are vegetables whose fruit is eaten. This applies to all types of melon, including watermelon.

2. Don’t eat it as dessert

Ever get a stomach ache after eating watermelon for dessert? That’s a common thing. Why? Because the meal must be digested first, watermelon is in fact ‘put on hold’ in the stomach. This allows it to ferment before digestion. For example, watermelon can lead to bloating, heartburn, or diarrhea after a heavy meal. Watermelon also contains a lot of fructose, which is not very pleasant for your stomach. It’s, therefore, better to eat watermelon on an empty stomach or wait an hour before eating it as a dessert.

3. The seeds are healthy

Many people spit out the seeds of watermelon. Shame. These seeds are packed with vitamins and minerals, including vitamin B, magnesium, iron, and zinc. In addition, watermelon seeds contain relatively many proteins compared to other nuts, kernels, and seeds. An eighth of a cup of watermelon seeds equals a whopping 10 grams of protein. Did you know that these kernels are also rich in healthy fats? There’s enough reason to swallow them from now on, then, right?

4. Yellow means ripe

You might be more likely to pass up a watermelon with a yellow spot than take it home. But that yellow spot is a sign that the melon has perfect taste. When a watermelon is ripe and fully grown, it falls to the ground. As the melon continues to bask in the sun on the ground, the rest of the rind turns greener, while the lying area becomes increasingly yellow. A yellow spot is therefore a clear indication that the melon wasn’t harvested too early. Is the lying area still white or greenish? Then it’s better to leave the melon alone. The greater the difference between the colour of the peel and the colour of the surface, the riper the fruit vegetable is.

5. You burn the calories immediately

Are you dieting? You can eat watermelon without feeling guilty because when you eat watermelon, you burn more calories than enter your body at that moment. For example, a 250-gram piece of watermelon contains only 50 calories. Of course, this has everything to do with the fact that watermelon largely (more than 90 percent) consists of water. However, due to the large amount of fructose, it’s not wise to eat watermelon continuously.
