Your parents, teachers, American films/series: they try to tell you all kinds of things when you’re in high school. There are some things you probably hear a lot that aren’t quite true or just plain wrong. Let’s take a look, shall we?
- You have to study further
If you know what you want with your future, further education is very useful. But if you don’t know what yet, there are other options as well. For example, you can take a gap year to travel. Or you can go to work to find out what you want to do. This way you can make your choice of study (or another choice) when you’re a little more mature.
2. You don’t need everything you learn
The only people who will have to deal with the Pythagorean theorem in their later life are 1. teachers and 2. the participants of any survival/game show. You learn a lot of things that seem nonsensical, but of course they aren’t always that. You train your (logical) thinking ability, your memory and your perseverance, and those are things that you can use in the future.
3. Teachers don’t understand what you’re going through
Believe it or not, your teachers also have a life besides teaching at school. And before they became teachers, they too were students. They often know very well what you’re going through.
4. School dances are an obligation
You like it or you don’t. Be that as it may, you’re under no obligation to go to a school dance. Are you really not into it? Then just stay home. And are you labeled as boring? So be it! Your life, your choices!
5. It’s the best time of your life
High school is a lot of fun for some, and not for others. People often say this simply because you have little homework and no responsibilities (yet). On your further education you have more homework and therefore more to do, but also much more freedom. And when you work, you have a lot more responsibilities, but also more money. So in short: everything has pros and cons.
6. Different groups
In American films/series about high schools, it’s unavoidable: every table in the cafeteria belongs to a certain group. The nerds, the jocks, the goths, the popular girls and so on. In reality, you can just hang out with anyone. It’s not all America, you know?
7. You’re only a someone with good grades
Getting good grades is very important, of course, but sometimes you study late into the night, and you still have a bad grade. The most important thing is that you know you did your best. Everyone has their talents and qualities. And maybe they won’t come out all the way now, but sooner or later they will!
8. You have to decorate your locker
Well, no, you don’t have to. In fact, it’s not even allowed, in most schools. Sticking something on the inside is of course no problem, but do it with tape, which you can remove without any problems. Otherwise you’ll get fines, and that’s the last thing you want.

I still hate teachers even though they went through the ‘same’ thing as we did. I mean, they clearly don’t care
