Game review: Resident Evil 2

I started playing this game 2 weeks ago on stream, as opposed to keep the Friday ‘Horror’ Streams intact. So, I definitely have an opinion already, and I’m more than ready to share that today. So, without further ado: let’s get into the review!

The player controls Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield, who must escape Raccoon City after its citizens are transformed into zombies by a biological weapon two months after the events of the original Resident Evil.

Leon Scott Kennedy is an American Federal Agent. Leon is an idealistic rookie cop. He burns with the need to protect and to serve, and life as a cadet was an eye-opening experience. While reckless and brash, Leon is certainly not as naive as his demeanour would suggest. He’s highly qualified for his new job with the Raccoon Police. Claire Redfield is searching for her missing brother Chris, an officer in the local police special force S.T.A.R.S.. Claire arrives in the Midwestern United States town of Raccoon City to find it overrun by zombies. She soon meets up with a rookie cop Leon S. Kennedy, but along the way she’s separated from him.

This is the map that gets bigger and bigger throughout the game, by collecting police maps and by reaching new floors. Sometimes, the map can be a little confusing. It took me a while to understand that white doors aren’t open, and blue doors are. But what I do love, is that the map shows what you’ve forgotten to collect, such as herbs, and when a room stays red, you haven’t fully investigated it yet. It’s an easy way to tell you which rooms are done searching, and which aren’t. Blue, in that case, obviously means done.

Throughout the game, you collect weapons, herbs, bullets, knives, notes, sprays, certain parts, etc. to get you through the game. The thing is though, you need to be careful with what you choose to take with you, because your inventory is easily pretty full. Then you have to discard things, or store them in a box. You can collect hip pouches as well, to carry more stuff, but that’s still not enough. Which is fair, I mean a normal human being would also not be able to carry that much. Yet, in a game like this, it can still be annoying πŸ˜‰

The enemies are: Zombies, The Lickers, The dogs zombie, Tyrant/Mr X, and some variations of zombies. In any case, the design of these enemies look amazing. The dogs are a little hard to kill, and kinda painful, seeing as they’re dogs. But what I hate more, is the fact that a bullet to the head doesn’t kill them. It takes about 4 bullets, and even then, they’re sometimes not dead. This is extremely frustrating and makes it hard to like the gameplay for shooting. The shotgun, for example, is a little more effective, but even that isn’t an instant kill. Nothing really is, whereas that’s completely different within other games that involve weapons.

And here I go again, complaining about the way the game lets you save. If you don’t reach a typewriter before you get killed, you lose all progress made since your last save, and you’ll have to do it all over again. So, my advice is to save as often as possible, no matter what you’ve done. Collected ammo? Good, save. Defeated an enemy? SAVE! Just, never forget to save once you come across a typewriter, it’ll literally help you to actually make some progress throughout the game.

Overall, I do love the game. The design is amazing, the puzzles aren’t too hard, the way the map works is a real plus to me, and your health doesn’t go down that quickly, so you’ve got enough time to heal and such. Yet, I dislike the fact that enemies are so incredibly hard to kill, and the saving mechanism, I’ve always hated that in other games as well. Other than that, Mr X is very annoying, kinda like Abraham from Maid of Sker, who continues chasing after you the entire time. But besides that, I do truly love this game. It works perfectly, controls are easy to use, and the game is just clear. Definitely a recommendation.

IΒ shall give Resident Evil 2, 4 out of 5 stars!
