Game review: Marvel’s Spider-Man

I’ve recently started a new game (last Thursday) on my Twitch channel. I gotta say, as I played it more and more in my free time (to obtain backpacks and such and clear areas) I started to like it way more than the first hour. I now got a good hang of the buttons I need to use and the swinging around the city. Anyway, let’s start my review!

When a new villain threatens New York City, Peter Parker and Spider-Man’s worlds collide. To save the city and those he loves, he must rise up and be greater.

Spider-Man is obviously created as your daily, loveable superhero: defeating crime and beating thugs. And Marvel’s Spider-Man for the PS4 isn’t anything different from that. Story-wise and off the story, you get to beat hundreds of thugs. There are normal thugs, melee weapon enemies, shield enemies, whip enemies, brute enemies, sable agents and jetpack agents. Each has a different way of attacking and for you to attack as well. The further you progress, the harder it is to defeat certain enemies without gadgets.

This image shows everything you basically need for the game. In the right upper corner, you’ll see the level you’re at and the amount of XP you’ve gathered so far. In the middle, is the map of New York. You have to ‘open’ each area by hacking three surveillance towers. It helps you to locate local Fisk thugs to defeat. At the bottom, you’ll see 6 figures with 6 colours. Those are the tokens you can get throughout the game, which helps you to buy suits and gadgets. Above, you see a red bar with multiple squares/rectangles. Those are the menus for gadgets, suits, skills (each level up means a new skill point to use), moves (with button explanation) and so on.

There are 28 suits. 25 standard suits and 3 that’ll only unlock once you reach a certain point in the story. Each suit has its own suit power (or well, some of them do. And some don’t. Though, more don’t than do).

There are 8 gadgets, each having unique abilities and upgrades. You can upgrade them with tokens, that you earn throughout the game as mentioned before. The same goes for some suits. Though, some are unlocked on its own (you know, those without suit power).

Last but not least, the skills you can activate. We’ve got three categories: innovator, defender and webslinger. It’s a huge advantage to combat to unlock specific ones. Or, you know, you could also pick the one to perform tricks in the air. For fun. Which, honestly, would be a pick of mine later on. Overall, I’m pretty stoked about playing it. I gotta say, the health bar is pretty low in the beginning, so I can only hope that gets better on in the game. The web-slinging is kind of an issue in the beginning. But the longer you play and swing around the city, the quicker you get it under control.

I shall give Marvel’s Spider-Man, 4 out of 5 stars!

Have you played the game?
