19 May 2024: I Prevail concert 2

I was fortunate to see this band live a second time, and despite Brian, the lead singer missing, they turned his absence into a forcedly amazing show! Without further ado, let’s get into this review!

The concert took place in Afas Live, Amsterdam. Upon arriving, I headed to the ground floor of the venue to check if I could stand somewhere over there, thinking to myself that it surely shouldn’t be super busy considering there were more 200+ tickets for sale after the announcement that Brian couldn’t make it due to a surgery he had undergone and his health not having fully restored, forced to take more rest and sitting the tour out. However, it was packed. I couldn’t stand anywhere. I then tried the first floor, but there too, weren’t that many spots left. I went to the top floor, and there I found many seats available. I picked one that was directly looking at the stage, and honestly, it was definitely a good spot pick. No one sat in front of me the entire time, no one sat next to me or behind me, and so I could enjoy the concert in full glory.

The crew had made sure that their instruments were all set up after the two support acts were done. I only witnessed the second support act, and they were honestly really good. The first was Kid Bookie, the second Set It Off. Anyway, once their instruments were all set up, it was 15 minutes of nothing, until they’d come up on the stage at 9.30 p.m. But, that didn’t happen. Despite everything being ready for 15 minutes, they didn’t come. As the first five minutes ticked by I grew worried. They would stop at 11 p.m., as the schedule said, but I was hoping they’d finish perhaps a bit earlier so I could rush to get the earlier train home. But, with this delay, I was worried that was a bygone thought. All of a sudden, the lights went out, and the video began to play. They were only really five minutes late, so I can’t technically complain much more about that. They played a total of 15 songs for us (3 new ones with the first set I’ve witnessed of them):

  • There’s Fear in Letting Go
  • Body Bag
  • Self-Destruction
  • Bad Things
  • Blank Space (Taylor Swift cover)
  • Visceral
  • DOA
  • Deep End
  • Breaking Down
  • FWYTYK
  • Judgement Day
  • Choke
  • Hurricane
  • Bow Down
  • Gasoline

They still ended earlier than expected, which meant I could rush outside and catch my train. But, let’s not focus on that. Let’s focus on the evening itself. The band gave an unforgettable show where they managed to entertain the audience from start to finish. During the first song “There’s Fear In Letting Go” the band stopped the music so that the audience could sing along, which immediately showed how well prepared the audience was for the show. There was an amazing imagery of death and impressive visuals displayed on stage. Unfortunately, as I mentioned before, Brian (clean vocals) was absent due to surgery on his vocal cords, but Dylan (guitarist) has proven himself to be a worthy replacement. Before the show started, there was a video about a person talking about the end of the world as we know it. The sequel to this video recurred a number of times, which made for a cohesive whole. That they were in the mood for a party was evident from the swirling mass that arose during songs like “Body Bag” and “Bad Things”. In addition, Taylor Swift’s cover, “Blank Space”, was well received. With songs like “Deep End” and “Breaking Down” there was also some room for rest in the set. The variety was very pleasant. “Breaking Down” talks about depression and addiction and that you’re never alone. Such moments are always beautiful to see in a room full of music lovers. In sharp contrast to such beautiful moments, there were two people in the audience waving lit dildos. As a result, the singer lost his train of thought for a moment, but everyone had a good laugh about it, including the band itself. On “Judgement Day” the singer asked for the biggest circle pit he had seen this tour. He even appointed a “pit manager” for this. The venue didn’t disappoint and a decent circle pit was the result. Of course, there was also room for the hit “Hurricane” towards the end of the set. This somewhat quieter song also fitted nicely within the set. The night ended with a bang, with the band coming back for “Bow Down” and “Gasoline”. At the last song, a final huge circle pit was created, which made for a spectacular conclusion to a great show. I Prevail managed to touch the audience and showed why they’re so loved by their fans. During I Prevail, 11 walls of death were counted. In a setlist consisting of 15 songs, that’s definitely a good score. Unfortunately, the mosh pits, circle pits and other activities were not counted because there were simply too many of them.

Love, Skye Lewis ❤
