International paranormal stories from abandoned locations: part 3

There are many (abandoned) buildings that behold ghost stories, or well, paranormal ones. I’ve always been interested in such stories, including abandoned buildings. Sure, the question will always be the same: are such stories true? Multiple buildings have been visited by paranormal scientists, and they said it was true. I’ve researched multiple stories last year, for no real purpose. In several parts, I’ll be telling all international paranormal stories! Today: part 3!

1. Forbidden City (Beijing, China)

The Emperor of China lived here since the 15th-century up until the start of the 20th. Now, it is said to be haunted by ghosts from the maids of honours. In 1421, Emperor Yongle ordered to slaughter the almost 3000 maids of honours who all lived in the Forbidden City. Why? Because he thought a beloved concubine had been poisoned. He spared some of his favourites, but on his own burial day, 16 courtesans were hanged with loops of white silk. A lady with black hair was seen running away from a ghostly soldier; screams were heard, just as the sounds of gun- and swordfights. Some have also seen the ghosts of bodies, as they called it, puddles of blood and pieces of white silk.

2. Glamis Castle (Angus, Scotland)

This castle was built in the 14th-century, where the queen/mother of Queen Elizabeth II grew up. It’s said to be haunted by multiple ghosts, such as The Grey Lady or The Lady of Glamis, known as Lady Janet Douglas. The Grey Lady was accused of murdering her own husband by poisoning King James V from Scotland. And, by using witchcraft. So, they burned her at the sake in 1537 in Edinburgh. Her spirit was said to haunt the clocktower, running up the stairs, leaving a trail of ashes behind. A woman without tongue as been seen ‘floating’ through the castle. And there’s the ghost of an 18th-century boy servant who was badly abused. He was said to be seen sitting on a chair at the bedroom door of the queen. The most famous ghost is Earl Beardie, the earl of Crawford. This nobleman visited the castle back in the 15th-century. He got drunk and demanded that someone would play cards with him. When no one would, he’d play his own devil, or so he said. A mysterious man with a black cloak appeared and said he wanted to play. The next morning, the earl had disappeared. Visitors who went to visit the castle said they heard cursing, loud voices, dice and glasses falling.

3. Monte Cristo Homestead (Junee, New South Wales, Australia)

This isolated house was built on a hill in New South Wales in 1884 by the farmer Christoper Crawley. After he died in 1920, his wife, Elizabeth became a recessed hermit. She left the house only twice before she died. It’s said that her spirit is walking through the rooms. Visitors report they felt an icy cold silence whenever she pops up, sometimes holding a silver cross. She’s not alone, seeing as these ghosts have been reported as well: a maid (of honour) who died because she fell off the balcony after she tripped, a stableboy who was burned by his master, a mentally handicapped person who was chained in the caretaker’s house for forty years. The last-mentioned ghost will show its presence by rambling with his chains.

4. Sturdivant Hall (Selma, Alabama)

It was built in 1856, bought by John McGee Parkman in 1864. In the years after the civil war, Parkman was arrested and held captive for cotton speculation. While in prison, he tried to escape. However, he got shot during the escape and died in the process. His wife was forced to sell the house a few years after his death, but his ghost then appeared. He was haunting the house and the terrain. And it still haunts the house till this day. People report that screens and doors are being opened and closed, while there’s no one else inside. Just as doors that close right after people enter, locking them in. The ghosts of two little girls have also been spotted, but no one knows who they are. Their identity remains unknown.

5. Whaley House (San Diego, California)

The house was built where there was once a graveyard, so that might declare the seeings of ghosts that are unidentified. Apart from these unnamed ghosts, the original owner, Thomas Whaley, his wife, one of his kids (a little girl) and a condemned person, is said to be seen regularly around the house. The house was already haunted beforehand, with the ghost of a man who was condemned and hanged on the side of the house. Right after he lived there once it was finished. The Whaley-appearances are seen doing their normal activities in their early life, every day. It’s known that doors close on their own and are being locked. Footsteps are heard throughout the house, together with music and a crying baby.
