Do you have a cold? Tips to get a good night’s sleep

A cold and a good night’s sleep often don’t go well together. And seeing as the winter is coming closer, it suffices to say that we’ll go through this. So, try these tips to sleep when surviving a cold!

  1. A warm shower or bath

A warm shower or bath isn’t only very relaxing but also causes your sinuses to open. This will allow you to breathe more easily, which will help you fall asleep faster.

2. Freezer

Put your pillowcase or sheets in the freezer before going to sleep. This sounds a bit crazy, but if you have a fever you’re often looking for that one cool spot in your bed. Put the pillowcase and/or the sheets in a resealable bag before you put them in the freezer.

3. Tea

Not only does tea soothe your throat, but it also opens up your sinuses. Just make sure it’s decaffeinated tea and that you don’t drink tea the hour before you go to bed. If you do, you will most likely need to pee while you sleep.

4. Pillows

Before going to sleep, make sure that you put a number of pillows on top of each other so that you lie a little higher than normal. If you lie flat, the mucus will build up in your throat. This will make you cough and you won’t be able to fall asleep easily.

5. Positive thoughts

It can be very frustrating if you have to sneeze and/or cough a lot and, despite all the well-intentioned tips, you’re still staring at the ceiling for what feels like hours. As difficult as it may be, try not to worry too much about the sleep deprivation you’ve accumulated so far. Think of something fun and positive. If this doesn’t work, you can also turn on a podcast or audiobook as a distraction. You’ll eventually fall asleep.
