18 October 2022: Sum 41 concert + Simple Plan

The biggest reason for me to attend this concert was so I could see my favourite band of all time for the third time after not having seen them since 2017. And boy, am I glad I went! Let me tell you how amazing my evening was!

The concert took place at Poppodium 013 in Tilburg. The concert was sold out, and I immediately went upstairs to the second balcony, just like I did last week. This time, I was lucky to be able to get a bit closer to the right side, and thus see the bands perform a lot closer and clearer. There were a couple of people standing in front of me, next to me, and behind me, but it didn’t take away the fun I had whilst singing, dancing, and cheering for Simple Plan.

The first support act was called Cassyette, and wasn’t really my thing. The instruments were pretty loud, as in not thoroughly synchronised and tuned in harmony. I was glad to have my headphones on me, as I put them over my ears whilst also wearing earplugs. It was that loud and painful to my ears. But, after that horrible 30 minutes, my favourite band Simple Plan came on stage, and boy did I smile throughout the whole thing. I cheered, I screamed, I danced, I sang, I genuinely haven’t been that happy in forever. I wish they would’ve performed longer than one hour, and would have a concert of their own, but I’d take this over not witnessing that for a while just yet. This was definitely worth attending the concert for and travelling! Anyway, they performed a couple of songs for us:

  • I’d Do Anything
  • Shut Up!
  • Jump
  • Jet Lag
  • Your Love Is a Lie
  • Addicted
  • Welcome to My Life
  • Iconic
  • Summer Paradise
  • All Star / Sk8er Boi / Mr. Brightside
  • Where I Belong
  • I’m Just A Kid
  • Perfect

After they had to (sadly) leave the stage, Sum 41 appeared, and to be honest, yes I used to listen to their music, but I genuinely never learned their lyrics by heart (except for their biggest hits, of course). And also, I love their music, but I’ve never been as big of a fan as I am of Simple Plan. I definitely am a fan, just not that big. If you get what I mean. Anyway, the boys have an amazing way of performing, and I was sad that I had to skip the final 5 songs to catch the very last train I could take. When I left, I literally had 12 minutes left to catch it, and it takes 10 minutes to get to the station… I made the train, don’t ask me how. But anyway, I’ll share the setlist as provided by other fans, including the five I missed.

  • Motivation
  • The Hell Song
  • Over My Head (Better Off Dead)
  • We’re All to Blame
  • Summer
  • Fake My Own Death
  • War
  • My Direction / No Brains / Rhythms / All Messed Up
  • Underclass Hero
  • Walking Disaster
  • With Me
  • In Too Deep
  • Makes No Difference
  • Pieces
  • We Will Rock You (Queen cover)
  • Still Waiting
  • Hooch (missed)
  • No Reason (missed)
  • Mr. Amsterdam (missed)
  • Fat Lip (missed)
  • Catching Fire (missed)

Deryck definitely has an amazing voice live, and I have to give it to him that he looks very good for his age. Not that he’s that old, but you know, he’s not the young boy he was when he first recorded those songs. And he was wearing the same kind of clothes he was wearing back then, which still fit him and look amazing on him. And as for Simple Plan, I love that they’ve made the floatable balls used on the beach a regular thing whenever they perform Summer Paradise. And the most memorable thing of the evening was of course Chuck (the drummer of Simple Plan) crowd surfing whilst wearing one of those white suits suitable for viruses and infections because, you know, covid is still a thing. But man, did I laugh through that entire thing!
