I’ve finished playing this game about 2 weeks ago, and today is finally the day that we get to talk about my likes and dislikes within this game! So, without further ado: let’s get into the review! Be aware: this review contains spoilers!
The player controls Jill Valentine and Carlos Oliveira, who must escape Raccoon City after its citizens are transformed into zombies by a biological weapon. Re-imagining of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (1999). Jill Valentine escapes the crumbling Raccoon City amidst the nightmarish outbreak of the T-virus, a biological weapon developed by Umbrella, while being pursued by the unrelenting bioweapon Nemesis.
Valentine is a former member of the Raccoon City Police Department’s S.T.A.R.S team, and initially worked alongside her partner Chris Redfield to fight the Umbrella Corporation, a pharmaceutical company whose bioterrorism creates zombies and other bio-organic weapons. Carlos is a guerrilla turned former U.B.C.S. mercenary who meets Jill Valentine during the destruction of Raccoon City. Despite being on opposing sides, the two band together to escape the Nemesis T-Type pursuing Jill and the city in general.
This is the map that gets bigger and bigger throughout the game by reaching new floors and areas. The map was the same as I’m used to from the second game, so I don’t have anything negative to say. The map shows what you’ve forgotten to collect, such as herbs, and when a room stays red, you haven’t fully investigated it yet. It’s an easy way to tell you which rooms are done searching, and which aren’t. Blue, in that case, obviously means done.
Just as with the other RE games, you have limited space in terms of carrying items around. You can put them in a box found near typewriters to save the game, or you can throw items away. Or of course, use them. Throughout the game you find hip pouches that can grant more space. Still, it’ll never stop being unpleasant to have to be aware of it throughout the entire game. You collect weapons, herbs, bullets, knives, notes, sprays, certain parts, etc. to get you through the game.
The most annoying enemy, by far even worse than Mr. X from game 2, is Nemesis. He keeps respawning at least five times in an even bigger form, stronger than the form before that. It becomes very annoying as he just keeps coming back despite thinking you’ve finally destroyed him for good. Sure, it’s what he’s meant to be designed as, so statistically speaking it’s amazing game design. But for the player, after fighting it a third time, the fourth and even the fifth, are more based on annoyance than feeling triumphed.
And now that I’m used to how saving works in the game, I no longer feel the need to complain about it. But it’s still annoying knowing that you lose all progress made since your last save, and you’ll have to do it all over again. So, my advice is to save as often as possible, no matter what you’ve done. Collected ammo? Good, save. Defeated an enemy? SAVE! Just, never forget to save once you come across a typewriter, it’ll help you to make progress throughout the game.
I loved the game the same way I loved the other RE games. Amazing graphics, wonderfully depicted enemies, lovely lighting throughout the game, and I love Carlos so much. But my god, his voice actor sounds so much like Keanu Reeves. I can’t help it, but they sound so familiar. The very first hours of playing the game, I truly thought it was him until I looked it up on the internet. Doesn’t take away the fact that I liked the chemistry between him and Jill, despite it being reluctant. I enjoyed playing the game, and I liked the new type of zombies being introduced to us. Those were Hunters, Pale Heads, and one whose head explodes to reveal a parasite with lashing tentacles. I didn’t enjoy it as much as I enjoyed 2 (considering I love Leon just a tiny bit more), but I still loved it a great deal.
End conclusion: yes, I recommend this game. I shall give Resident Evil 3, 4 out of 5 stars!
