Fun facts about food

A friend of mine asked me via Twitter to make a blog post about food fun facts. Who am I to deny that considering we all need food? So, without further ado: this article is for you, Hanna!

  1. Peaches and nectarines

They’re nearly genetically identical except for one thing: a gene that’s either dominant (in peaches) or recessive (in nectarines). That determines whether the skin is fluffy or smooth.

2. McDonald’s fries

They were cooked in beef fat until 1990. But in an effort to make them look “healthier”, they’re now cooked in vegetable oil.

3. German chocolate cake

It didn’t originate in Germany. It’s named that way because of Sam German – the man who invented a type of baking chocolate. The first published recipe for German chocolate cake was actually written by a Texas housewife.

4. Hawaiian pizza

Nope, it’s not from Hawaii. It was actually invented in Canada.

5. Wasabi

Most of this is just horseradish that’s dyed green. Real wasabi is difficult to grow, very expensive, and should be consumed within 15 minutes of being grated.

6. Pineapples

They can take two to three years to grow. It’s a very long process.

7. Nutmeg

Too much of this can get you high. It contains myristicin, a compound that has hallucinogenic properties – and brutal side effects – when taken in very large doses.

8. Cashews

They grow on cashew apples. They’re edible, but better used in juices, jams, and chutneys since the flesh is bitter.

9. Cilantro and fresh coriander

They’re technically the same thing. They’re just two different names to describe the same plant. (There are also coriander seeds – which come from the plant, too, and you can find them whole or ground into spices.)

10. Peppers and oranges

Petters have in fact more vitamin C than oranges. About two or three times as much, depending on the colour of the pepper.

11. Lemons and limes

Lemons float – but limes sink. It all comes down to density: limes are slightly denser than lemons.

12. Spaghetto

What that is? A single spaghetti noodle. Yes, it has a name: spaghetto.
