After a night out or heavy rain fall, your shoes will spontaneously look five years older. But don’t worry: there are plenty of ways to clean your beloved shoes – and here’s how you do it!
- Cleaning shoes
Smooth leather is easier to clean than suede, as you probably already know. Yet not everyone knows that you also have to clean each differently. Where you can scrub smooth leather, you have to be more careful with suede and fabric. An overview of the best cleaning tactics per material type:
- Remove the dirt with a damp cloth or suede brush.
- Apply a nourishing cream (leather) – leave it on for 15 minutes.
- Finish with a protective spray that stops rain and dirt.
2. Smooth leather
Smooth leather is the easiest material to clean of all. It often contains a protective layer of its own, so that you can easily wipe off the moisture and dirt. Do that with a damp cloth and dry your shoes afterwards. Then use a wax or wax-based cream and leave it on for 15 minutes. Then finish it off with a protective spray.
3. Suede
For suede it’s best to purchase a special brush from a shoe store or shoemaker. Gently brush off the dirt and let your shoes rest for a while. If the stains are stubborn, you can gently dab on the stains with a damp cloth. Don’t use soap or other means. Afterwards, spray the shoes with a water and dirt-repellent spray.
4. Fabric
Textile/fabric shoes are best cleaned with a small amount of green soap and a sponge. Apply the green soap to the stains and rub in lightly. Rinse the sponge, then blot the stain until you’ve removed the soap from the fabric. Repeat several times and let your shoes air dry. Are your white All Stars really dirty? Then you can also put them in the washing machine, but you should only use this as the last option. It’s not good for the soles of shoes.
