Tips for a successful vegetable garden!

Anyone with a vegetable garden knows this: growing vegetables makes you zen, and it’s also healthy as you know exactly what’s used and what’s not. And with these tips, your vegetable garden is guaranteed to be a success!

  1. Start small

First, focus on 7 to 10 different types of vegetables and herbs that you actually eat. Herbs are easy to care for, especially cress grows quickly. Beans, plucked lettuce, arugula, and cherry tomatoes are also great to start with.

2. Pick the right place

  • Before you start sowing: on a sunny day, check at several times which places in your garden receive the most sunlight. Most vegetables need 6 to 8 hours of sunlight to grow properly. Vegetables such as arugula, spinach, lettuce, beets and carrots prefer partial shade and need 3 to 6 hours of sun per day.
  • Keep the different wind directions in mind. North winds blow cold air, while south winds carry warm air. The latter is better.
  • Not too close to trees and shrubs. These provide shade.

3. Sow the seeds

  • In the ground. Do this starting from the spring. Divide it into levels. Plant species from one crop group together per area, such as cabbages, leafy vegetables and legumes. Every year you move the groups to a different place. This crop rotation prevents diseases and pests and ensures that the soil doesn’t become exhausted. Make a floor plan and keep track of what has been planted in which place. Sow the seeds in a straight line, so you can distinguish the weeds from the plants.
  • In pots. Make sure that the pots are spacious enough, with a diameter of at least 25 centimeters and a depth of 30 centimeters.
  • In a cultivation table. Nice working height and less weeds.
  • Hanging. If you have limited space. In garden centres, you’ll find bags in which you can sow the seeds.

4. Provide good soil

  • Open soil. Check which soil you have, sandy, clay or peat soil, and find out what grows well on it. Before sowing, cover the top 10 centimeters with organic vegetable garden soil.
  • Pots. First apply a layer of hydro granules for good drainage. Sprinkle vegetable garden soil improver on top and close with at least 30 centimeters of potting soil for vegetable garden boxes. Fill to a few inches below the brim and press lightly.

5. Take care of it

  • Open ground. Regularly give vegetable garden fertiliser and water, remove weeds and use biological protection products against lice and snails.
  • Pots. Occasionally add some liquid plant food to the water.
  • Both. Provide lots of flowers nearby. Bees, butterflies, beetles and birds are attracted to them and eat aphids and snails, but also pollinate plants.
