The tips for challenges you experience when travelling alone

Do you want to travel alone now that most countries allow it again, but are you afraid of certain aspects that are connected to travelling? Especially when travelling alone? Check out these solo travel tips!

  1. Am I capable?

By travelling alone, you gain many new experiences in no time. If you’re adventurous, smart, and resourceful, a happy holiday experience can contribute to a more positive self-image, including more self-confidence and mental and emotional strength. Check if your type of holiday matches with what you want. Don’t go too far out of your comfort zone, unless you want maximum adventure and challenge.

2. Am I safe?

Use your feelers: does something or someone feel right or not? Never give your ratio the benefit of the doubt. Practice this at home: check what makes you feel good or not okay. This strengthens your intuition. If it doesn’t feel right where or who you’re with, then go away. You don’t have to stay because that might be socially desirable. You owe no one anything.

3. I have no back-up

Good preparation is important. It gives you more security because you know which safety net you have in case of panic. For example, keep emergency numbers and money in multiple places, such as in your phone, in your travel journal, and in your wallet. Is your entire planning going wrong? Give in to the stress, but not for too long. Make sure that you calm down by, for example, having a drink somewhere. You’ll begin to think about what the options are now. This way, you go from panic to acceptance and ultimately to a mindset of challenge.

4. Dinner alone?

You’ll notice that this pops up at the beginning of your journey, as you’ll meet a lot of new people in a short period of time. Then you have the choice: do I want to eat alone or with others? Do you find it uncomfortable to sit alone at a table in a restaurant, but are you afraid to approach anyone to eat with? Take a book or your travel diary with you for the necessary distraction.

5. Where do I go?

You can make a list in advance with all the things you’d like to visit, but don’t buy tickets yet. Only book the first two nights at the same accommodation at your (first) destination. This way you have plenty of time to collect the best tips from locals. So challenge yourself to approach other people and be open to new contacts. A simple way to meet new people is to book a fun tour. Or take a hop-on-hop-off bus tour. Sounds like a ‘tourist trap’, but it’ll take you past all the highlights of the city and you can then decide what you want to do.

6. What if I’ll be lonely?

Loneliness happens to even the most seasoned traveller. Homesickness can suddenly overtake you in the evening. Don’t fight this, but give in to it by calling home. Then you go to sleep and feel like new the next day.
