The health benefits of sleeping

A good night’s sleep is invaluable and essential for good health. Why? Well, I thought that was pretty clear but, in case it wasn’t, let me list all the advantages!

  1. Weight

Many studies have shown that a lack of sleep can cause you to gain some weight. This has to do with your hormones and the motivation to exercise. Your hunger and satiety hormones are disrupted by a lack of sleep and you, therefore, feel the need to snack more. Very logical, but annoying if you’re trying to make healthy choices.

2. Concentration

Your cognitive performance improves with a good night’s sleep. You will also be able to work problem-solving and your memory will work better.

3. Sports

A good night’s sleep ensures that your muscle strength increases. A lack of sleep increases the risk of injuries and annoying aches.

4. Heart

A lack of sleep increases the risk of developing various heart diseases. A lack of sleep can also lead to high blood pressure.

5. Diabetes

There’s a relationship between a lack of sleep and the development of type 2 diabetes. For example, a lack of sleep makes your body less sensitive to insulin, more inflammation occurs in your body, and you make fewer healthy food choices.

6. Mood

You can probably imagine that a bad night’s sleep isn’t good for your mood. Fatigue often makes you feel more depressed and/or anxious.

7. Immune system

A chronic lack of sleep results in a weaker immune system, so you get easily sick. Your body has more trouble fighting a cold, for example.

8. Social interactions

If you don’t sleep well, you’re less able to process emotions properly. As a result, you’ll also be less able to empathise with someone else and you’ll respond less to jokes from others. You may temporarily cancel social activities, making you feel more lonely.
