Game review: Life is Strange: True Colors

I started playing this game on stream, game number three in the Life is Strange series. Do I like this game more than the other two? If so, why? If not, how come? Without further ado: let’s get into the review! Be aware: this review contains spoilers!

Alex Chen has long suppressed her ‘curse’: the supernatural ability to experience, absorb and manipulate the strong emotions of others, which she sees as blazing, colored auras.

The protagonist of the game is Alex Chen. She comes to this little mining town called Haven Springs to be reunited with her older brother Gabe. She meets many people in town, but the two that she can potentially get romantically involved with, are Steph and Ryan. Of course, the Life is Strange series wouldn’t be called that if there wasn’t some awful incident, and thus she loses her brother Gabe on the first day of being in that little town.

As with the other two games, you’re once more the one making the life choices of the character. What they say, what they do, who they hang out with. You get 2-4 choices to make a dialogue choice or a much bigger choice that has consequences in the end. As we all know, the Life is Strange games thrive on consequences no matter what choice you make. As for the power being the subject in this game, Alex is capable of feeling other people’s emotions and even taking the heavy ones away. With that, I have to admit, it’s the best power out of the three. It’s not selfish like the first power of Max was, and not pretty useless and reckless like Daniel’s power in the second game. This power actually helps people and discovers the truth along the way.

In the first game, you had to collect photographs. In the second, objects would be souvenirs. Now, you have to really look for the memories to obtain for trophies. Though I must say, they’ve done it pretty clever. Whenever you’re close to one of the memories, there’s a white little dot that gets significantly brighter and bigger when it contains a memory. And it makes it then easier for you to scan it with your emotional abilities. Though they do give hints when getting close enough, they’re not that easy to find and they’re easily missable. When you aim for platinum, I, therefore, suggest you follow a guide on where their locations are. Luckily, you can easily replay bits of a chapter to find the missing ones.

All in all, I did like this game way more than the previous ones. It had way more dialogue and more choices that I felt really mattered in order to maintain your friendships with certain characters. I have to admit that I still felt more connected to Sean in the second game than to Alex, but romance-wise… Ryan is by far the best game character I’ve ever seen! He’s just literally everything I’d want for a romantic interest. But of course, that shouldn’t influence my review. As for the ending, I find it a bit boring, to be honest. The first game was all about sacrificing a town for love, or a love for a town, and the second had actually six endings. And this, this is just a normal life choice of staying in the town and building a life with your lover or moving along the road and finding adventure, with your lover. Not really that spectacular. And Typhon is from the start already known as the bad guys, which makes the whole ‘who did it?’ thing fall away. It’s basically just finding ways to destroy the company and gain evidence than finding out who actually did it. But all of that aside, I did like this game a lot!

End conclusion: yes, I recommend this game wholeheartedly. I shall give Life is Strange: True Colors, 4,5 out of 5 stars!
