Make your own yule log (Bûche de Noël)!

A traditional Christmas dessert: that’s the yule log. It’s a cake that represents the yule log that families would burn starting on Christmas Eve. So, let’s take a look at today’s recipe, shall we?

  • 170 grams of butter, cubed (at room temperature)
  • 170 grams of granulated sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 100 ml milk
  • 110 grams of self-raising flour
  • 50 grams of cocoa
  • A pinch of salt
  • 200 grams of dark chocolate
  • 100 ml whipped cream
  • 6 tablespoons of mascarpone
  • 5 tablespoons of strawberry jam

Steps to follow:

  1. Preheat the oven to 160 degrees.
  2. Place the butter and sugar in a bowl and beat until light and smooth.
  3. Beat the eggs and add the flour, cocoa and salt. While stirring, pour in the milk. When your batter is smooth, you’re done. Pour the batter into the baking pan and bake the cake for 20 to 25 minutes.
  4. Sprinkle some powdered sugar on a clean tea towel. Loosen the edges of the cake with a knife so that you can turn it over on the tea towel. Remove the baking pan and let it cool.
  5. Time for the filling. In a bowl, mix the mascarpone and strawberry jam with a whisk. Don’t beat too hard, it should stay airy. When the cake has cooled, cover the cake with the filling.
  6. Roll up the cake using the tea towel. It doesn’t have to be tight and it doesn’t matter if the cake breaks. Wrap the rolled cake in foil and refrigerate for about an hour.
  7. Then all that remains is the chocolate layer around the yule log. Beat the whipped cream in a bowl. Melt the chocolate using low heat, which you then pour into the whipped cream. Mix until it’s an even mixture. Remove the cake from the fridge, place on the tea towel and brush with the chocolate mixture.
