Few things feel as good as new shoes! You naturally want to keep your shoes beautiful for as long as possible. So, you’ll have to polish them and give the material love and attention. Below a number of hacks for you to do that!
- A toothbrush, hydrogen peroxide and baking soda
Shoes made of fabric that are a bit lighter in colour quickly turn grey and dirty. Dip an old toothbrush in a mix of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide (available at a drugstore). Rub it on the shoe, and you can brush off the grey cast.
2. Leather shoes
Leather shoes start to look old and weathered. Mix vinegar and water in a spray bottle and spray it on the shoe. You can gently rub this into the shoe with a brush. Or use a banana peel. Rub the inside of the banana peel on your leather shoe and remove any residue with a paper towel.
3. High boots
Knee-high boots in a soft fabric can cause a crease in the boots if the top hangs limply next to them. You solve this by rolling up a newspaper or magazine and placing it in the boot. This keeps the soft top upright so that the area between the shoe and boot doesn’t crease.
4. Shoes without black stripes
Do you have black stripes on the outside of your shoes? This is caused by bumping your shoes into each other while walking. Dip a cotton swab in nail polish remover and use it to remove the black streaks. Your shoes are like new again.
5. Make your shoes water resistant
When your shoes are treated with a water-repellent layer, they’ll last longer. Moisture stains and mud splashes are a thing of the past. Various sprays are available for purchase at shoe stores. If you like DIY, an alternative is to rub your shoes with wax from candles. A precise job, but the same effect.
6. Dirty smells
When it comes to preservation, don’t forget the inside of the shoe. Smelly shoes aren’t pleasant to put on and certainly not to take off. You can rub a cotton ball with alcohol or tea tree oil on the inside of your shoe against these odors. Another tip: hang tea bags in your shoes that absorb moisture and any odors.
