Game review: Phasmophobia

A dear friend of mine, living in Austria, asked me to install Steam so we could play a game together: Phasmophobia. He was a bit afraid to play it on his own and I’m dead inside when it comes to horror games. So I said yes, and so we started playing. And without further ado: let’s get into it!

Phasmophobia is a 4 player online co-op psychological horror. Paranormal activity is on the rise and it’s up to you and your team to use all the ghost hunting equipment at your disposal in order to gather as much evidence as you can.

You see the characters in the game, but can’t see your own character. You only see what he/she is holding in their hand. You have 4 categories of equipment you’ll be able to use along your journey. Starter equipment, which every ghosthunter needs. Then there’s van equipment, the stuff you’ll find in your van parked outside of the place you’re hunting for ghosts. We also have onsite equipment, fun stuff to summon ghosts with. And last but not least, we’ve got purchasable equipment, which is basically more important stuff to use to find the ghosts.

Each contract you take on, is one that needs the ghosthunters to collect evidence of the ghost’s existence and which ghost it is. You need to take photos, gather fingerprints and other pieces of evidence to determine which ghost is haunting the place. You’ve got so many different kinds of ghosts. Spirits, wraiths, phantoms, poltergeists, banshees, jinns, mares, revenants, shades, demons, yureis and onis.

To hunt the ghost, you have excess to optional objectives. With the exception of the tutorial mission, it will always display 4 objectives and a paragraph with information about the ghost, such as its name and whether the ghost responds to everyone or only people that are alone. Once an objective has been completed, the text on the board will become grayed out.

I myself am not spooked by playing this game, but I can imagine some are. You don’t know which room the ghost is hiding in, unless you use the equipment that can determine if they’re present. I just wander in on my own while my friend stays in the van, scared to come back out. You just have to make sure your sanity levels stay positive. Because your character, apparently, gets spooked and you can only restore that with pills, which are kinda expensive to buy.

The game is pretty fun, because I love horror and if I could in real life, I wouldn’t mind hunting ghosts. I’ve always been interested, never scared of anything like that. I just laugh when my friend screams as we walk through the house to determine which ghost is haunting the place. And that’s all I need: friends to play with and a good laugh. It’s a little bit hard to understand the controls fully, and I tried using my PS4 controller. It works, but has issues. I therefore use both: controller to move, laptop keyboard to pick stuff up. But I do recommend playing this game. It’s fun and you have to think and collect evidence. Precisely my type of game, especially when I can laugh with the ones I’m playing with.

I shall give Phasmophobia: 3 out of 5 stars!

Have you played the game?

    1. I find myself laughing at others playing such games. I’m pretty dead inside when it comes to horror games, they don’t do anything to me. Which makes it amusing for me to watch others get spooked haha
