I know that oceans are slowly disappearing (as a parting gift from climate change). Nevertheless, all that lives beneath the water’s surface is still astonishing. And, to hopefully help you realise the oceans need help, I’ll share some amazing facts that some don’t know or have forgotten about!

- Our oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth’s surface. It’s evident how vital these marine environments are to our planet. And, how much we haven’t explored yet.
- The majority of life on Earth is aquatic. Seeing as most of our surface is underwater, it shouldn’t a surprise that marine species outnumber those on land. 94% of the Earth’s living species exists within the oceans.
- Less than 5% of the planet’s oceans have been explored. Sure, researchers strive to discover more, but it takes time and effort. Nonetheless, we’re continually getting to know our oceans better.
- The world’s longest mountain chain is underwater. It’s called Mid-Ocean Ridge and is almost entirely beneath the ocean. It stretches across a distance of 65,000 kilometres. It’s however less explored than Venus or Mars.
- There are more historic artefacts in oceans than in all the museums in the world. Around 1000 shipwrecks lie off the Florida Keys alone. Other underwater museums originate in recent years, including the Mediterranean’s submerged bronze statue: Christ of the Abyss.
- We only know a fraction of the marine species in our oceans. There are 240,470 accepted species. However, this is just a small proportion of the ones that exist, as new marine life is being discovered each day.
- Over 70% of our planet’s oxygen is produced by the ocean. Now, don’t get me wrong, we still need trees. So don’t go chop them after reading this. But, scientists believe between 70 and 80% of the oxygen we breathe is produced by martine plants. Most of them are marine algae.
- You can find rivers and lakes beneath the ocean. When salt water and hydrogen sulfide bcombine, it becomes denser than the rest of the water surrounding it. This enables it to form a lake or river, flowing beneath the sea.
- Around 50% of the US lies beneath the ocean. So, it’s not only a large part of the planet that exists beneath the ocean. 50% is quite a lot, ain’t it? For US alone.
- The Pacific Ocean is the world’s largest ocean. It contains around 25,000 islands. So, it has more islands than anywhere else on our planet.
