How your music preference tells your personality

I read multiple studies on how your music preference ‘tells’ and ‘influences’ your personality. So, before we start, I want it to be clear that this post is based on multiple studies, but therefore doesn’t mean it’s ‘the only answer.’ As I said, there are far more studies out there that say different things. Just want you to keep that in mind πŸ˜‰

Pop music

Fans of the top 40 pop hits are said to be extroverted, honest and conventional. As for the pop music lovers themselves, they’re considered hard working and have high self-esteem. Studies say they tend to be less creative and more uneasy.

Rap/hiphop music

You know that ‘stereotype’ that rap lovers are more aggressive or violent? Well, studies shows that this link isn’t valid. They do tend to have high self-esteem and are usually outgoing.

Country music

Fans of this genre are typically hard working, conventional and outgoing. Sure, such songs are often centered on heartbreak, but people who gravitate towards this genre tend to be very emotionally stable. And, they tend to be more conservative and rank lower on the trait of openness to experience.

Rock/heavy metal music

Sure, people often say the rock/heavy metal image is comparable with the aggressive trait, but that’s far from true. Because, lovers of this style of music are usually quite gentle. They tend to be creative, but are often introverted and they may suffer from low self-esteem, which is why they escape to this genre.

Indie music

Fans of this genre are typically introverted, intellectual and creative. They tend to be less hard working and less gentle. Passivity, anxiousness and low self-esteem are other common personality characteristics.

Dance music

People who prefer this kind of music are usually outgoing and assertive. They tend to rank high on the trait of openness to experience. And, they also tend to rank low on gentleness.

Classical music

They’re typically more introverted but are also at ease with themselves and the world around them. They’re creative and have a very good sense of self-esteem.

Jazz/blues/soul music

People who enjoy either of these three (or all of them) are said to be more extroverted with high self-esteem. They also tend to be very creative, intelligent and at ease.

What’s your preferred genre music and does it match your personality traits?

Mine does to an extent. I am indeed gentle, but not at all introverted. I do love being social and meeting new people. I’m an ambivert myself and luckily for me, I don’t have a low self-esteem. It’s true that the genre is some sort of escape for me, but not because of low self-esteem. I just really like the beat and pace of the genre.

  1. This is an interesting post, but I think my personality contradicts this. I am very much an extroverted, personable person who prefers metal and hard rock to pop music any day.
