Game review: Man Of Medan

I’ve finished this game last Tuesday and at the end found out that a certain trophy was glitching. This happened with several secrets throughout the game as well. I went to Google and found out these are common problems. Which is sad, because it makes the experience less fun. Either way: let’s find out what my other thoughts are about this game!

In this survival horror adventure, four friends and their captain set sail on a holiday diving trip to find a rumoured WWII wreck, but as the day unfolds, a storm rolls in and soon their trip changes into something much more sinister.

You’re playing as five characters in the game. Sure, at the beginning there’s also one, but he won’t stay long. Anyway, the characters are from left to right: Brad, Julia, Alex, Fliss and Conrad. Alex and Brad are brothers, Julia is Alex’ girlfriend, Conrad and Julia are brother and sister and Conrad is trying to flirt with Fliss.

Throughout the game, you have to make in-game decisions on what to say. These choices are either head choices or heart choices. Sometimes it’s only two of one, sometimes it’s both. You can also choose to say nothing. Which sometimes, is more valid than choosing to say something. Anyway, trophies glitch at this point. There are two trophies for both: choosing only heart choices and only head choices. I tried the heart choices one, but the trophy glitched. And if you want to platinum this game, you must play it a lot of times. I don’t know if this game is worth it since I didn’t enjoy it as much as their previous game Until Dawn.

Instead of needing to keep your controller still, you now need to press the button in time to keep your heartbeat steady and stay calm. I must say, this is so weird. You easily ruin this, in which you get caught. I think in all honesty, that I prefer the ‘not moving your controller’ QTE more in Until Dawn. It’s just kind of annoying when you fail and the game saves right away. So no going back until you’ve finished the entire game.

You collect secrets and see black and white framed pictures to reveal clues and story needed information. There’s also one golden framed picture. Some can only be found in the curator cut (where you play in the theatrical cut) and some only when hosting (playing with someone else online). This is really annoying since the curator cut must be downloaded and the online part can only happen when you’ve found someone willing to help you gather the missing clues, which contains specific choices need to be made.

It’s said to be a horror game. But again, just like Until Dawn, I don’t find this one a horror game. To me, it contains even less horror-themed scenes and is basically based upon hallucinations. The game itself, story-wise, is quite weak to me. I think this is my least favourite game so far on the PS4. It’s just not really giving me any reason to replay it again. Okay, maybe for completion of trophies. But that’s about it.

I shall give Man Of Medan: 2 out of 5 stars!

Have you played the game?
